HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Pond Stays Hot for Simi Valley

Britten Pond, who hit for the cycle a day earlier, had a double, a triple and drove in two runs, leading Simi Valley High to a 7-2 victory over West Torrance on Saturday in the second round of the El Segundo tournament.

Trevor Leppard (1-0) struck out six and allowed one earned run in six innings for the Pioneers (2-0).

In other El Segundo tournament games:

Crespi 13, Carson 4--Catcher Casey Snow was three for three with two runs scored and three runs batted in to lead the Celts (2-0) to a second-round victory.

Jorvic Salazar (1-0) pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, then was relieved by Gus Jordt, who retired all seven batters he faced.

Paramount 6, Royal 5--Donald Martinez singled home Keith Loitz in the seventh inning to bring host Royal (1-1) to within a run, but Paramount survived.

Brea Olinda 2, Burroughs 1 (9 inn.)--Josh Cartee of Burroughs (1-1) allowed two hits in seven innings in a losing effort.

L.A. INVITATIONAL

North Hollywood 9, Dorsey 0--Starter Patrick Fields (2-0) pitched four scoreless innings, striking out seven for the victory. The junior right-hander has pitched eight consecutive scoreless innings. Oscar Gonzalez had a three-run triple for the Huskies.

SAN FERNANDO TOURNAMENT

El Camino Real 18, Thousand Oaks 5--Justin Martin was three for four to lead the Conquistadores (3-0). Clint Harris was two for three and has six hits in seven at-bats for the Lancers (1-1).

WESTSIDE TOURNAMENT

Notre Dame 8, Culver City 2--Junior Jabbar Craigwell slugged a three-run home run in the fourth inning to lift the second-ranked Knights in their season opener.

Canyon 7, San Pedro 6--The Cowboys (1-1) recorded the final out when catcher Brian Eggleston retrieved a wild pitch and threw to pitcher Rick Harbo, who tagged a runner trying to score from third base. Canyon broke a 5-5 tie with a two-out, two-run single by Adam Vance in the fifth inning.

Beverly Hills 14, Rio Mesa 8--The Spartans (0-2) lost despite three home runs by senior designated hitter Greg Spink. Spink hit a three-run homer in the third, and bases-empty home runs in the fifth and sixth.

Chaminade 20, Palisades 3--Adam Crecion had four hits and scored three runs and Brian Powers had three hits and four runs batted in to lead the Eagles (2-0).

Saugus 11, Harvard-Westlake 7--Kevin Brown had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for Saugus (1-1).

Montclair Prep 10, Chatsworth 8--Brad Fullmer socked a bases-loaded triple in the third inning and keyed a five-run rally in the sixth with a three-run homer to lead Montclair Prep (1-1).

Taft 11, Hueneme 9--Deshon Polk scored on an error to tie the score, and Stacy Kleiner followed with a sacrifice fly to score Don Witkow with the go-ahead run in the seventh for visiting Taft (2-0). Juan Ponce had three hits, including two homers, and four RBIs for Hueneme (1-1).

Channel Islands 5, Alemany 3--Ysidro Alfaro and Adrian Castellon each had two hits to lead Channel Islands (2-0). Chris Tashima went two for three for Alemany (0-2).

Sylmar 9, Camarillo 4--The Spartans (2-0) scored seven runs in the third inning.

NONLEAGUE

Hoover 2-10, Norwalk 3-2--Ron Pirayoff went five for seven with three RBIs for Hoover (2-1). Hoover earned the split behind Doug Jackson (1-0), who struck out seven in five innings. Reliever Gerald De La Pena pitched a scoreless sixth for his second save.

Paraclete 2, Littlerock 1--Dave Murray singled home Brian Lathrop with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. Lathrop had four hits and Drew Gonzales three for Paraclete.

Crescenta Valley 15-18, La Canada 2-2--Jim Parque struck out eight and allowed one hit in five innings in the opener and Brendon Cowsill was three for four with a home run and five RBIs in the second game.

Palmdale 11-5, Apple Valley 1-0--Joe Garcia and Todd Berry each pitched complete games for the Falcons.

Glendale 6-5, San Luis Obispo 5-0--David Gantt pitched a complete game in the opener and junior Loren Geller earned the second-game victory.

Moorpark 14-14, St. Bonaventure 8-4--Adam Rauch (three hits, two RBIs, two runs), Ricky Collier (two hits, three runs) and Jason Adamson (two hits, three RBIs) led visiting Moorpark in the first game. Richard Hernandez and Bill Finnerty each had two hits and two RBIs in the second game.
