COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Arizona Rebounds to Hold Off Stanford

Ed Stokes matched his career high with 24 points and Ray Owes added a career-high 19 as third-ranked Arizona defeated Stanford, 94-80, Sunday at Palo Alto.

Stokes also had 12 rebounds.

Owes added 15 rebounds to help Arizona outrebound the Cardinal, 39-25.

Arizona, 22-3 overall and 15-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference, was coming off a 74-71 loss to California on Thursday night at Oakland that ended the Wildcats’ 19-game winning streak.

Stanford (7-21, 2-14) led, 58-57, before a 13-4 run by Arizona.

No. 4 Michigan 87, Michigan State 81--Juwan Howard scored five of his 19 points in overtime, helping the Wolverines to a Big Ten Conference victory at Ann Arbor, Mich.

The loss may have ended the NCAA tournament hopes of Michigan State (14-11, 6-10), and Michigan (24-4, 13-3) continued its drive for a No. 1 seeding.

Chris Webber led Michigan with 21 points. Michigan State’s Shawn Respert led all scorers with 27.

No. 5 Kentucky 85, Florida 77--Travis Ford scored 23 points to lead the Wildcats (23-3, 13-3) to a Southeastern Conference victory at Gainesville, Fla.

Jamal Mashburn scored 16 points for Kentucky.

Stacey Poole led Florida (16-10, 9-7) with 18 points.

No. 8 Kansas 74, No. 19 Oklahoma State 73--The Jayhawks overcame a six-point deficit during the last seven minutes to win a Big Eight Conference game at Stillwater, Okla.

Rex Walters led Kansas (24-5, 11-3) with 27 points.

Bryant Reeves led Oklahoma State (19-7, 8-6) with 28.

No. 17 New Orleans 73, Arkansas State 59--Reggie Garrett scored 18 points and Ervin Johnson scored 15 to lead the Privateers (26-2) to the victory in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament at Biloxi, Miss.

Fred Shepherd led Arkansas State (16-12) with 16 points.

No. 22 Louisville 83, Notre Dame 68--The Cardinals (18-8) overcame a 14-0 deficit to win easily at Louisville, Ky.

Louisville was led by Dwayne Morton, who scored 14 points.

Monty Williams led Notre Dame (9-18) with 34 points.

No. 23 Massachusetts 75, St. Bonaventure 62--Derek Kellog scored 19 points for the Minutemen (21-6) during the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament at Philadelphia.

Harry Moore led St. Bonaventure (10-17) with 26 points.

Stephan Stewart scored 24 points as Coppin State (22-8) earned a bid to the NCAA tournament with an 80-53 victory over Delaware State (13-16) in the final game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at Norfolk, Va. . . . Tennessee Chattanooga (26-6) gained an NCAA tournament bid with an 86-75 victory over East Tennessee State (19-10) in the final game of the Southern Conference tournament at Asheville, N.C. . . . William Davis scored 22 points to lead top-seeded James Madison (21-7) to a 70-61 victory over American (11-17) in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Assn. tournament at Richmond, Va. In the other semifinal, Lester Lyons scored 18 points for East Carolina (12-16) during a 55-50 victory over North Carolina Wilmington (17-11). . . . Mike Vandegarde made two free throws with 11.3 seconds to play, giving top-seeded Illinois State (19-9) a 60-59 victory over Drake (14-14) in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament at St. Louis. In the other semifinal, Ashraf Amaya scored 18 points to lead Southern Illinois (22-9) to a 76-68 victory over Southwest Missouri State (18-10).

Rob Robinson scored 19 points for Niagara (23-5) during a 64-59 victory over Canisius (10-18) in the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament at Albany, N.Y. In the other semifinal, Manhattan (22-6) advanced with a 71-70 victory over Siena (16-13). . . .
