Jeremy Roenick stunned the Ottawa Senators with a goal only 17 seconds into the game. Then he set them back on their heels with another later in the period.

The two goals started the Blackhawks on their way to a 4-2 victory Sunday at Chicago as the Blackhawks lowered the expansion Senators’ road record to 0-34-0. It’s the second longest such streak in NHL history, behind only the 37 consecutive losses by the 1974-75 Washington Capitals.

Even so, the Blackhawks didn’t think the Senators could be taken lightly.

“You’re supposed to win games against expansion teams, especially in your own building,” Roenick said after scoring his 35th and 36th goals. “But they played us tough, and we certainly did not take them for granted.”

Thanks to Roenick’s quick goal, the Blackhawks took charge early. But the Senators continued to sleep-walk through the rest of the game as the Norris Division leaders dominated for the most part.

The Blackhawks stopped a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) with the victory.

“It was not a pretty win,” Blackhawk Coach Darryl Sutter said. “We’ve had to play three games in four nights, and we haven’t had any sleep. But Roenick’s goal gave us a big jump.”

The Senators, 2-9-0 in their last 11 games, fell to 9-56-4.

San Jose 6, Edmonton 3--Kelly Kisio scored two goals in the third period and the Sharks outscored the Oilers, 5-1, in the final two periods at Daly City, Calif., to win for only the 10th time this season.

Detroit 7, Minnesota 1--Dino Ciccarelli burned his former North Star teammates for two goals and two assists at Bloomington, Minn., reaching the 30-goal plateau for the 10th time in his career.

Steve Yzerman scored his 49th goal and assisted on three others for the Red Wings.

Buffalo 2, Winnipeg 1--Alexander Mogilny and his Sabre teammates continued their assault on the Jets at Buffalo and ended a five-game winless streak.

Mogilny scored two goals on assists by Pat LaFontaine, increasing his league-leading total to 65. He has scored six in two games this season against the Jets.

Buffalo’s home record against Winnipeg is 18-1-2 since the Jets entered the NHL in 1979.

New Jersey 7, Philadelphia 3--Dave Barr ignited a six-goal Devil outburst in the third period at East Rutherford, N.J., breaking open a tight game and extending New Jersey’s unbeaten streak to five games.

N.Y. Islanders 3, Washington 2--The Islanders extended their winning streak to four games, at Landover, Md.

Benoit Hogue scored his 29th goal with 4:14 to play, providing the winning margin and moving the Islanders within one point of the idle New York Rangers, who hold the final playoff position in the Patrick Division.
