Share

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is accepting applications for a new city program that provides discount transportation for senior citizens and disabled residents, officials said Monday.

Qualified applicants can buy $60 worth of transit scrip for $15 every three months. The scrip can be used to pay for taxis, private lift vans for disabled people or a local bus pass.

Applicants must provide proof they are senior citizens or disabled.

The program will be offered to 100,000 residents, said John Fong, a city transportation planner. The first 40,000 low-income applicants, with proper identification, will be charged $6, he said.

The program, called CITYRIDE, will begin April 1.

Applications can be picked up at senior citizen centers, Southern California Regional Transit District sales offices, City Council field offices and the Independent Living Center, 14354 Haynes St., Van Nuys.
