Freeway traffic in both directions along Interstate 10 in Montclair was shut off for an hour Monday morning after an armed man barricaded himself in a home that abuts the freeway, Montclair police said.

The man, identified as Calvin Hunter, 38, of Montclair, surrendered peacefully to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s SWAT team at 10 a.m. and the freeway was reopened, Montclair Police Sgt. Keith Jones said.

Police were called to Hunter’s house at 3:30 a.m. Monday after his girlfriend fled the house saying he had beaten her. She told authorities he was armed with a handgun.

The freeway was closed about 9 a.m. as a precaution against possible gunfire and because Hunter threatened to run out onto the freeway, Jones said. Traffic was diverted onto surface streets.

Hunter was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery. No shots were fired during the incident, Jones said.
