Most teams wouldn’t get too excited over finishing 1-7. But St. Michael’s celebrated last season because the Pioneers won a baseball game for the first time in 10 years. Although he’s just 1-25 during his tenure at St. Michael’s, Dignan remains upbeat about the season. “Thanks to a fresh crop of new talent, the team should improve on last season’s record,” Dignan said. “Also, for the first time in the school’s history, the principal has decided to allow the baseball team to play nonleague games.” This should help the Pioneers prepare for the Academy League season, where it appears they will fight it out with South Gate Southeast Lutheran for fourth place in the five-team league. Although the scheduling changes should help the Pioneers, they are still plagued by poor practice facilities, which feature a field on a hill. “When you stand at third base, you can’t see first base,” Dignan said. Sesma was the team’s leading hitter last year with a .211 batting average. Ruiz, the Pioneers’ No. 1 pitcher, lost five games last season but also earned the Pioneers’ lone victory.
