OUTLOOK

The Eagles scored 32 runs in their first two games of the season . . . but they managed only a split in a doubleheader with Santa Fe Christian. They won, 19-1, then lost, 19-13. “It looks like we can swing the bat and we’ve got some kids who have power,” Zippi said. “Our hitting has been the most pleasant surprise.” Lambert, Ghosheh, Bennett, Border and Jason Biniasz, all taller than 6 feet and at least 180 pounds, make up the heart of the Capistrano Valley Christian lineup. All have home-run power. “Birtwell and Fisher are our ‘smurfs’ who get on base at the top of our lineup, but the funny thing was, Fisher hit a grand-slam homer on Saturday.” The Eagles’ pitching is the biggest question. Zippi’s only apparent advantage is that five of his six front-line pitchers are left-handed. Sears earned the victory in the first game against Santa Fe Christian pitching four scoreless innings. However, the rest of the staff allowed 16 hits and 20 runs in nine innings. “The defense played well, but we need the pitchers to throw strikes and get consistent,” Zippi said.
