OUTLOOK

After a third-place Academy League finish last season, St. Margaret’s hopes to contend for the league championship with a solid nucleus returning. Cecil, last season’s cleanup hitter and starting shortstop, returns after hitting .420 with a team-high 23 RBIs. Rodriguez, the team’s leadoff hitter who stole 19 bases last year, returns for another season as the starting catcher. Kelley and Miller, the two best pitchers from last year’s squad, return to give Hays a good lefty-righty combination, and two newcomers--Kim and Mezey--give St. Margaret’s more speed in the outfield. Kim returns after a one-year absence to start in right field and Mezey, a nationally ranked junior tennis player, will play his first season of baseball for the Tartans. “Wade will probably play tennis in college,” Hays said. “But since this is his senior year, he decided to come out for baseball.” Mezey will start in center field for a defense that must play well for the Tartans to succeed, Hays said. “If we can gel, at least we’ll make Liberty Christian or Cal Lutheran earn the title.”
