SAN FERNANDO VALLEY : Business Group Backs LEARN Plan

Share

A leading San Fernando Valley business group has thrown its support behind the LEARN proposals to overhaul the Los Angeles public school system.

The executive committee of the Valley Industry and Commerce Assn., which represents 350 businesses, voted unanimously Monday to support the plan put forth by the Los Angeles Educational Alliance for Restructuring Now, a coalition devoted to reforming city schools. The LEARN proposals call for vast decentralization of power.

VICA education committee Chairwoman Carolyn Ellner, dean of the Cal State Northridge School of Education, commended LEARN for its efforts but added that “some problems still have to be resolved” in the plan, such as financing and monitoring the reforms.

She also said VICA’s support for the LEARN proposals would not preclude it from taking a stand on a potential breakup of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which LEARN President Mike Roos opposes.
