A 33-year-old man was killed Thursday night when a large truck rear-ended his car on the Antelope Valley Freeway in Santa Clarita, authorities said.

The victim, a Merced resident whose name was not immediately released, died shortly after the 7 p.m. crash, said Officer Gary Greenfield of the California Highway Patrol.

The victim’s car had broken down and was partially blocking a southbound lane when the double-trailer rig hit it, Greenfield said. When officers arrived, they found the truck jackknifed into the center divider and the car’s driver in the roadway. The driver of the truck rig was not injured.
