SAILING : Pace, Heiner Maintain Tie Atop Standings

Share

Bertrand Pace of France and Roy Heiner of the Netherlands continued in a tie for the lead in the Congressional Cup sailing regatta off Long Beach on Friday.

Rod Davis and Steve Grillon dropped into a third-place tie as light winds and tactical errors took their toll. Davis had a near replay of Thursday’s finish-line fracas with Eddie Warden-Owen during his race Friday against Chris Law of England. Davis led narrowly going into the last windward mark when Law was penalized for a collision as the boats rounded the mark. Law moved into the lead and tried to sail his penalty loop right at the finish line, but Davis barely had enough speed to save the victory.

Davis, the only three-time winner of the Congressional Cup, was beaten by Heiner in the first race of the day and finished the third day of round-robin match racing in Catalina 37s with a 9-3 record, the same as Grillon. Pace and Heiner are 10-2. Racing will continue today and Sunday.
