COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS : Probation for Clubs Considered

The Associated Students at the College of the Canyons is considering instituting temporary probation and freezing funds for campus clubs that fail to participate in inter-club meetings.

Mike Joslin, director of student activities, said Friday the action is being considered because a number of clubs have failed to attend Inter Club Council meetings or participate in club membership drives.

A new Associated Students vice president will be assigned to evaluate options, Joslin said.

“We’re in the process of appointing a new vice president,” Joslin said. “I will work with that student to work out which clubs have been attending the meetings and those which have not.

“We’re going to have to talk about the possibilities of putting those clubs on probation in making them realize that there are consequences for not following the guidelines for being a club on campus,” Joslin said.

Only a few clubs participated in a “Club Rush” event on Feb. 16 and 17 that was designed to recruit members, Joslin said. A number of council meetings have also had disappointing turnouts, Joslin said.

On-campus clubs are entitled to store their funds through the student activities office and to receive matching funds from fund-raisers through the Associated Students, Joslin said. If turnouts at the ICC meetings do not improve, Joslin said, “they don’t deserve to be storing their funds through my office and getting the matching funds.”

In addition to temporary probation, other disciplinary actions could include freezing those clubs’ funds currently held by the activities office and restricting the clubs’ ability to use facilities on campus for club events.

No COC clubs could be reached for comment.
