COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Millan’s Three Hits Pace Fullerton in 7-3 Victory

Adam Millan had three hits including a double and two RBIs to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 7-3 victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday in a Big West Conference baseball game at Santa Barbara.

Dan Ricabal (3-1) struck out five over 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, to earn the victory for the Titans (10-7, 2-0), ranked seventh by Baseball America.

Chad Rolish relieved Ricabal in the seventh and struck out the three hitters he faced before Ted Silva pitched hitless relief over the final 1 2/3 innings for his third save.

Dante Powell hit his fifth home run of the season to lead off the third inning for the Titans. Santa Barbara is 9-12-1, 0-2.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 7-5, Westmont 11-1--Ryan Meredith allowed only four hits and struck out nine in the second game for SCC (9-8, 2-3). Jason Brissey had a double and a triple, and Ryan Seidel also had a triple in the first game for SCC.

In nonconference baseball:

Cal Baptist 9-4, Christ College Irvine 5-3--Mike Jackson had two hits, an RBI and a home run for Cal Baptist.

In Big West Conference softball:

Nevada Las Vegas 4-1, Cal State Fullerton 2-0--Sara Mallett, a freshman left fielder from La Habra High, had a pair sacrifice flies in the first game for host UNLV (9-3, 4-0), ranked 12th in the nation.

Marci White and Kelly Hunt had two hits each for fourth-ranked Fullerton (6-10, 3-3) in the second game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 2-8, Point Loma Nazarene 1-0--Shannon Saylor pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine, and Stephanie Wills had three hits including the game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth in a 2-1 victory for SCC (14-6-2, 3-1) in Game 1.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Miami 4--Host Irvine (4-5) won two of three doubles matches to clinch the upset of 22nd-ranked Miami.

Southern California College 8, Loyola Marymount 1--Aaron Webster won his No. 1 singles matches and then teamed up with Bobby Carlton to post a victory at No. 1 doubles for SCC.

At the Bronco/Green Magma Invitational:

Local colleges perform well--Akem Smith of Cal State Fullerton finished third in the women’s triple jump. Rayna Cervantes of UC Irvine finished fourth in the 1,500 meter at 4 minutes 44.85 seconds, and Anteater Pam Kurpela finished fifth in the 200 25.20.

UC Irvine’s Pam Kurpela and Jamie Karrer finished fifth and seventh in the 100 at 12.45 and 12.73. Lana Banks finished seventh in the 400 for the Anteaters.

In the men’s division, Mike Nielson of UC Irvine finished third in the 1,500 at 3:55.42.

Cal State Fullerton’s Albert Avila finished fifth in the discus throw, and Irvine’s Phu Nguyen finished fifth in the long jump.

Nguyen also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet 2 inches.

Fullerton’s Zaylot Stout finished third in the event with a jump of 42-9.
