John Vanbiesbrouck, alone, was almost enough. But even at his best, the New York Ranger goalie couldn’t single-handedly stop the Boston Bruins.

Though Vanbiesbrouck’s 35 saves kept the Rangers in the game, the Bruins got too many chances at him, winning, 3-1, over the Rangers at New York Monday night.

At one point in the second period Boston had outshot New York, 13-0, to little avail.

“John was playing so well, he just stoned us,” said Boston goaltender Andy Moog of Vanbiesbrouck. “He just had one of those games.

“I just didn’t want to give up a soft one (on the Rangers’ first shot of the period). The first stop’s real important.”

Moog stopped five in that second period and 14 more in the third to record his sixth consecutive victory.

Steve Leach’s tie-breaking goal, his 21st, highlighted the Bruins’ strong second period.

Moog preserved the lead at the end with one of his 27 saves, stopping Ed Olczyk’s shot from the right point. Steve Heinze then added an empty-net goal as Boston handed the Rangers only their third loss in 12 games.

Quebec 4, Toronto 2--Mats Sundin’s power-play goal early in the third period snapped a tie and led the Nordiques at Quebec.

Sundin hit a rebound off the end boards past Felix Potvin at 2:38 to give Quebec a 3-2 lead in a match between the league’s two most improved teams. Gino Cavallini scored into an empty net with 46 seconds to play.
