The Marshall High boys’ volleyball team, which was the City Section 3-A Division runner-up last season, is off to another good start.

The Barristers, under fifth-year Coach Marji Donatella, won nonconference matches against Chatsworth, Bell and Roosevelt before opening Northern Conference play Monday with a victory over Belmont.

Marshall returns several players from a squad that lost to Venice in five games in the City final and finished 15-2. Senior middle blocker Tim Surette and junior setter Darry Tse lead the Barristers.

More than 80 high schools from California will compete in the 51st annual Pasadena Games that are scheduled for March 27 at Occidental College.

Nine boys and nine girls from area schools have been selected to play for West teams in all-star basketball games featuring seniors from the West San Gabriel Valley.

The games will be played March 27 at La Canada High. The girls’ game is at 6 p.m. and the boys start at 8.

Dave Craig and Jason Pruett of St. Francis, Brandon Crane and Eric Danneker of La Canada, Chirag Desai of Glendale Academy, Joe Khouzman and Chad Reese of Hoover, and David Sofro and Hai Tran of Glendale were selected to the boys’ team. Tim Rupieks of Flintridge Prep is an alternate.

Girls participating include Paula Bautista of Glendale Academy, Nancy Evans of Hoover, Denise Gutierrez and Erin McGoldrick of Flintridge Sacred Heart, Nada Kawar and Keri Peterson of Crescenta Valley, Melissa Lord and Gloria Nunez of La Canada and Melanie Slocum of Flintridge Prep. Lina Davidian of Flintridge Prep is an alternate.

Maria Fulay of Marshall was an honorable mention selection to the All-City 4-A basketball team.

Fulay, a senior, averaged 13.2 points and four rebounds a game. She led Marshall to an unbeaten record in league and to the quarterfinals of the City playoffs.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team improved its record to 11-6 and 7-4 in the Western State Conference with victories last week over Bakersfield and Ventura and a defeat by Pierce.

Glendale plays at Cuesta today, then plays host to College of the Canyons on Saturday. The Vaqueros are at Santa Monica on Tuesday.

The Glendale men’s and women’s track teams will participate in the Northridge Invitational March 27.

The Glendale women finished second and the Vaquero men finished third in a Western State Conference triangular track meet with Santa Monica and Cuesta last weekend.

Santa Monica won the women’s meet with 100 points. Glendale’s America Rivas won the 3,000 and finished second in the 1,500 to help Glendale to 34 points. Cuesta had 13.

Santa Monica also won the men’s meet with 67 1/2 points. Cuesta had 45 and Glendale scored 38 1/2.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College men’s and women’s cross-country teams were selected as 1993 NCAA Division III Cross-Country Coaches Assn. All-Academic teams.

The Occidental men were honored for compiling a cumulative grade-point average of 3.14. Scott Winder, a junior from Gig Harbor, Wash. with a 4.0 grade-point average, and Terence Flynn, a freshman from Burbank with a 3.67 GPA, were honored for their individual achievement.

Occidental’s women’s team had a 3.07 GPA. Alexis Kays, a freshman from Claremont with a 3.90 GPA, and Michelle Studley, a freshman from Los Angeles with a 3.90 GPA, received individual recognition.

Occidental diver Marra Stankus was eliminated in the first round of competition last week at the NCAA Division III championships at Emory University in Atlanta.

Stankus, a junior from Middlebury, Conn., competed in the one- and three-meter springboard events.

Stankus was the first Occidental diver to compete in the nationals since 1946, when Sammy Lee was attending the school.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Lindsay Parker, La Canada--Parker struck out 20 of 23 batters during an 18-0 softball victory over Marshall Fundamental.

Parker, a sophomore, did not give up a hit or a walk, but lost a perfect game because of an error by the Spartans.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Grace Padilla, Adams State (Col.)--Padilla, a former standout at Glendale College, finished ninth in the 1,500-meter event at the NCAA Division II indoor nationals at Vermillion, S.D.

Padilla finished with a time of four minutes 48.15 seconds. Thirty schools participated in the championships.

MISCELLANY

A golf tournament sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce in La Canada-Flintridge, Montrose-Verdugo City and Crescenta Valley will be played Wednesday at the La Canada-Flintridge Country Club.
