COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titan Wrestlers All Fall in NCAA Meet

Michael Grubbs and Christian Holiday of Cal State Fullerton advanced to the second round, where each was defeated Thursday in the NCAA wrestling championships in Ames, Iowa.

Grubbs (118 pounds) defeated David Harden of Tennessee-Chattanooga, 12-8, in the first round before losing to Eric Akin of Iowa State, 6-3. Holiday beat T.J. Dantzler of Northern Illinois in the first round, then lost to Mike Schyck of Ohio State, 6-2.

Two other Titans lost their opening matches. Corey Olson of Nebraska pinned Laszlo Molnar (177) at 2 minutes 8 seconds in the first round and Matt Finacchio of Rider beat Jeff Maes, 10-5, at 126 in the preliminary round.

In the Rebel Springs Games softball tournament in Orlando, Fla:

Chapman 2, Trenton State 0--Deann Ford pitched a two-hitter and struck out six, and Jenny Jordan had two hits and drove in a run for Chapman (9-8).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 8, La Verne 1--Bobby Carlton and Jeff Westover won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles to clinch the match for Southern California College.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Yale 4--The doubles team of Michelle Manley and Krista Kuechler, which had been winless in nine matches, won for the first time, defeating Yale’s Cindy Kuragami and Kari Weiner, 6-1, 6-4, to clinch the match for UC Irvine (4-8).

In nonconference baseball:

Dartmouth 7, Christ College Irvine 6 (11 innings)--Christ College Irvine forced extra innings with three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Dan Davis was three for six with two RBIs for Christ College Irvine (7-11-2).
