Why Should Ballplayers Care About the Deficit?

It should come as no surprise that major league baseball players earning more than $1 million a year, more than 99.99% of all Americans, are opposed to President Clinton’s plan to increase the top income tax rate (Morning Briefing, March 7).

For the most part, today’s players don’t give much of a damn for their team, their teammates and especially their fans. Spurred on by rapacious agents, ballplayers are driven only by money. So, what do they care around the country’s deficit, growing unemployment, loss of high-paying jobs, the need for medical-care reform, increasing crimes of all types, deteriorating education, non-functional families, drugs, guns, AIDS, etc. Play ball!
