Five rain delays and six hours did not cool off top-seeded Steffi Graf, who beat No. 3 Gabriela Sabatini, 6-0, 6-2, during Friday’s semifinals at the Lipton Championships.

Graf, who won in 68 minutes, had lost eight consecutive matches to Sabatini in Florida and had never beaten her so decidedly anywhere.

“She played great,” Sabatini said. “It was one of the best matches I’ve seen from her.”

In today’s final, Graf will play No. 2 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who beat No. 16 Kimiko Date, 6-2, 6-1. Graf has lost only 12 games during her five matches in the tournament.

In the men’s semifinals, No. 2 Pete Sampras will face No. 5 Petr Korda and unseeded South African Marcos Ondruska will play Mal Washington, who beat Patrick McEnroe, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).

Korda upset No. 3 Stefan Edberg, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), in a quarterfinal that was delayed four times, including briefly at match point during the second-set tiebreaker. Edberg failed to convert three set points with Korda serving at 5-6 in the second set.

“It’s tough to play on a day like this,” Edberg said. “Anybody could have won today because it’s so tough coming on and off the court.”

Sampras swept No. 10 Richard Krajicek, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). Rain interrupted their tiebreaker with Krajicek leading, 5-4. When play resumed 90 minutes later, he double-faulted twice to lose the match.

“That was definitely one of the weirdest ends to a match that I ever played,” Sampras said. “It’s the most bizarre day I’ve ever been associated with.”
