MOORPARK : Residents Urged to Recycle Phone Books

Hoping to cut down on the number of telephone books dumped in area landfills, the city of Moorpark and its two residential trash haulers are joining forces to sponsor a telephone book recycling program that will run through April.

From April 1 to April 30, residents can place their outdated telephone books in their green curbside recycling containers with other recyclables, city officials said.

Residents living in condominiums, apartments or mobile homes can drop their telephone books in newspaper recycling bins located in their complexes. Telephone books also can be placed in the drop-off bin located on Tierra Rejada Road, just east of Spring Road.

Moorpark Mayor Paul Lawrason said the telephone book recycling would help the city meet goals of a state law that mandates the reduction of waste sent to landfills.

Moorpark residents and businesses receive annual phone directories from Pacific Bell, GTE and the Donnelly Information Co., city officials said in the release. It is estimated that if each household and business discards those three directories, about 28 tons of telephone books would be placed in landfills each year.

Recycling the books would save an estimated 500 trees, officials said.
