Louisville guard James Brewer not only scored 26 points to lead the Cardinals to a 78-63 second-round Midwest Regional victory against Oklahoma State Sunday, but this time he actually remembered what happened.

It was only two days earlier that Brewer, while chasing after a loose ball in a game against Delaware, tumbled over a metal railing, smacked his head on the Hoosier Dome concrete floor and suffered a concussion. He left the building on a stretcher, with nothing to show for his effort except nine minutes of play, three points and one nasty headache.

“I thought the fans would catch me,” he said of the incident.

Sunday was different. No spills, only points. In fact, the 26 matched his season high and came during a 25-minute span.

So impressive was the performance that Oklahoma State Coach Eddie Sutton made a beeline for Brewer after shaking hands with the Louisville staff at game’s end.

“Any time somebody plays a super game against our ballclub, I try to search him out after(ward),” Sutton said.

Brewer wasn’t the only Cardinal player worth congratulating. Center Clifford Rozier scored 19 points, had eight rebounds and perhaps more importantly limited Bryant (Big Country) Reeves.

Reeves took only three shots during the first half and only eight for the game. He finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, but that wasn’t what Sutton had in mind from the Big Eight Conference’s leading scorer and rebounder.

“I knew that if I let Reeves get the ball down low, it was going to be a long game,” said Rozier of the 7-foot, 285-pound Oklahoma State center.

The fifth-seeded Cowboys, who made their first six shots, led 31-30 at halftime.

The fourth-seeded Cardinals (22-8) watched as Oklahoma State (20-9) took a 10-point lead during the first seven minutes of the second half. Then Brewer went to work, scoring 20 points during the second period. Louisville tied the score at 44 and pulled away in the final 7:46.
