LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Welfare, Probation, Parks Departments Plan Layoffs
Welfare, parks and probation department officials have drafted proposals for deep cuts in services as Los Angeles County copes with a projected $1.16-billion budget deficit, the worst in its history.
According to documents released Monday, the Department of Public Social Services could eliminate 382 to 1,353 jobs under two budget proposals drafted by welfare officials. The deeper cut would include the elimination of 1,255 eligibility workers, a move that officials say would throw welfare offices into chaos.
Adopting a similar reduction plan, the county Department of Parks and Recreation could eliminate up to 288 jobs and close 24 of 33 swimming pools. The Probation Department is considering closing 17 of 19 juvenile detention camps and laying off 1,406 employees.
The Board of Supervisors is expected to debate the proposals when it begins budget deliberations in July.
