Even the Sacramento Kings’ ball boys are taller than King guard Spud Webb.

But the 5-foot-7 Webb had a big impact, scoring a season-high 29 points, three short of his career high, and had a career-high 17 assists as the Kings defeated the Clippers, 121-104, before a sellout crowd of 17,317 at Arco Arena on Tuesday night.

King center Wayman Tisdale tied his career high by scoring 40 points in 39 minutes, making 19 of 23 shots. Tisdale also had eight rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and two steals as Sacramento ended a three-game losing streak and scored their 10th home victory against the Clippers in 12 games.

“They played real solid,” Clipper Coach Larry Brown said. “Wayman and Spud played great games. They had half their team sitting on the bench, and they looked like a team vying for a playoff spot.”

Danny Manning had a team-high 30 points and 11 rebounds and Ken Norman added 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who have lost three of their last four games.

Trailing by 20 points early in the third quarter, the Clippers outscored Sacramento, 25-11, to close to 83-77 with 2:40 left in the quarter. But the Kings ended the quarter with a 10-4 spurt to take a 93-81 lead into the final quarter. The Clippers didn’t get any closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

“Tough start,” Clipper guard Ron Harper said. “Tough? I don’t know what to call it. It was pretty ugly. Point blank, they came out and shot the ball well, they made their shots, and we didn’t.”

Said Clipper guard Mark Jackson: “It was a terrible performance by us. They knocked down shots and made decisions that made it a long night for us.”

While some NBA teams are preparing for the playoffs, the Kings are preparing for their annual trip to the NBA draft lottery.

The Kings, who lost 10 of their first 13 games after the All-Star break, have been hurt by injuries this season. They went into the Clipper game with only 10 sound players.

All-Star guard Mitch Richmond is sidelined for the season because of a broken right thumb, and forward Lionel Simmons, the Kings’ leading active scorer and rebounder, sat out the game because of a bruised left thigh suffered during last Friday’s 111-107 loss to the Warriors.

Center Duane Causwell, the Kings’ leading shot blocker, sat out his eighth consecutive game because of a sore left foot. And guard Randy Brown played despite taking eight stitches to close a cut above his right eye after being elbowed during practice.
