Northridge’s Sanchez Quits to Concentrate on New Job

Cal State Northridge baseball assistant Stan Sanchez resigned Wednesday in order to concentrate on the Southern Colorado program he will coach next season.

Southern Colorado, which will field a team for the first time in 10 years at the Division II level, named Sanchez its coach in January.

“I have a head-coaching responsibility at Southern Colorado and the demands of the job are starting to become pretty extreme now as far as the recruiting part of it is concerned,” Sanchez said. “I think it is only fair to the university here at Cal State Northridge that I resign at this time because they are obviously right in the thick of the (Western Athletic Conference) season and I personally want to make sure there isn’t a conflict of interests.”

Sanchez’s resignation, which came one day after the Matadors’ worst loss in four years, surprised Coach Bill Kernen.

“It’s a shock,” Kernen said. “Apparently Stan felt it was impossible to build a program somewhere else and be able to give it everything he’s got here this season. We have a policy with the players and coaches that you have to have a 100% commitment to the program or nothing. He probably felt uncomfortable with that and felt he should do the same with his own program.”
