Saugus Off to Races on 54th Season

Saugus Speedway is scheduled to kick off its 54th season of stock-car racing tonight on a freshly paved one-third-mile oval.

Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, the inaugural running of the track’s Pro Four Modified division and a destruction derby are scheduled.

Official opening-night ceremonies are scheduled for next Saturday, when the track’s Sportsman and Grand American Modified divisions will make their first appearance.

The six-month season will include visits by the NASCAR Southwest Tour on May 22 and Sept. 11, and the running of the NASCAR Winston West 200 on April 24.

Ron Hornaday Jr. of Palmdale is the defending Southwest Tour champion.

Bill Sedgwick of Granada Hills is the defending Winston West champion.

U.S. Auto Club Midgets are scheduled to race at Saugus on June 12 and July 10.

Drivers from the Super Modified Racing Assn. will join the Midgets on July 10.

Also scheduled is the track’s annual Independence Day racing and fireworks show on July 3.

There aso are the annual twin 50-lap races for Sportsmans on Aug. 14, and the annual Fall Spectacular on Sept. 25.
