PREP ROUNDUP : Woodbridge Wins Championship at Brea Relays

Gary Young won the 100 meters and Mark Backoff won the 400 to lead Woodbridge to the boys’ team championship at the Brea Unocal Relays Saturday at Brea-Olinda High School.

Woodbridge won the relay championship with 110 points and Upland was second with 103. Marina finished third with 56 points.

Brea broke meet records in both the weightman’s 400 relay and the discus. In the weightman’s relay, the Wildcats finished the relay in 50.5 seconds, beating their own record of 52.5 set in 1992.

Brea also shattered its 1977 discus mark of 385-feet-10-inches by throwing for a combined 403-5 1/2.

In the girls’ competition, sophomore Meisha Wilson-Duval finished second in the 100 in 12.2 seconds and Katie Durham finished second in the 400.

Upland won the girls’ relay championship with 97.5 points and Woodbridge was second with 84. Garden Grove finished fourth with 56 points.

Villa Park’s Alanna Palacio won the 110 hurdles in 16.6 seconds.

In the Garden Grove Argo softball tournament:

Loara 6, San Clemente 0--Tammy Hyde had a double and pitched a one-hitter to lead Loara (10-1) to a fifth-place finish. Laura Blain pitched a two-hitter to help Loara advance with a 4-2 victory over Bolsa Grande in an earlier game. Jill Tantardini hit a home run for Bolsa Grande.

Garden Grove 2, Cerritos Gahr 1--With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, pinch-runner Priscilla Torres scored from third on an infield hit by Andrea Carreira for host Garden Grove (9-3) in the consolation final. Garden Grove advanced by beating Western, 15-0, in a consolation game called after five innings because of the mercy rule. Mandy Mendoza hit a grand slam for Garden Grove (8-3).

In nonleague softball:

Ocean View 5-7, Katella 0-2--In the first game, freshman Jennifer Hatcher had two hits and two stolen bases for visiting Ocean View (9-3).
