Downey : Council OKs Curfew Law for Use in Emergencies
The City Council has passed a strict curfew law in anticipation of possible disturbances after the federal trial in the Rodney G. King beating case.
The ordinance would allow the city manager to declare a state of emergency in the event of civil disturbances, earthquakes or major fires, and order residents to remain in their homes from sunset to sunrise, if necessary.
Violators would be charged with a misdemeanor and would be subject to a $500 fine, six months in jail or both.
“We need the authority to impose a curfew over the next few months,” City Atty. Peter Thorson said. “We want to be prepared for any civil disturbance.”
