TENNIS ROUNDUP : Graf Takes Title Despite Knee Injury

Steffi Graf overcame an injury and the determination of Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to win her fourth Family Circle Cup title Sunday at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

The top-seeded Graf outlasted No. 2 Sanchez Vicario, 7-6 (10-8), 6-1, after falling behind, 5-3, and sustaining a slightly sprained ligament in her left knee.

Graf finished Sanchez Vicario after getting her knee wrapped for support between sets.

Officials said Graf’s injury would be reassessed in a couple of days but did not expect her to miss any action.

Michael Chang beat Amos Mansdorf, 6-4, 6-4, at Osaka, Japan, to win the Salem Open.

The match began with five consecutive service breaks before Chang took a 4-2 lead by holding in the sixth game.

Andrei Medvedev beat Karel Novacek, 6-4, 6-2, to win at Estoril, Portugal.

After breaking Novacek’s serve in the first set with a spectacular volley, Medvedev settled in for a controlled, baseline attack that ended the match in less than 90 minutes.
