NHL ROUNDUP : Penguins Are One Short of Record

The Pittsburgh Penguins moved within a game of matching the NHL record for consecutive victories Sunday as they won their 14th in a row at East Rutherford, N.J., 5-2, over the New Jersey Devils.

The winning streak tied the 1929-30 Boston Bruins for second longest in league history and is one shy of the New York Islanders’ standard of 15 set between Jan. 21-Feb. 20, 1982, a year the Islanders won their third of four consecutive Stanley Cups.

Mario Lemieux scored into an empty net with nine seconds left to extend his goal-scoring streak to 11 games, and he added two assists to extend his point-scoring streak to 14.

New York Rangers 4, Washington 0--The Rangers snapped a four-game losing streak and enhanced their playoff hopes by beating the Capitals at Landover, Md.

New York built a 3-0 first-period advantage and goalie John Vanbiesbrouck made it stand up with a 24-save performance. It was his fourth shutout of the season and 200th career victory.

Calgary 4, San Jose 3--Joe Nieuwendyk scored early in the second period to break a 1-1 tie as the Flames stopped the Sharks for the second straight night.

The win increases Calgary’s lead to seven points over the Kings in the battle for second place in the Smythe Division. The Sharks’ losing streak was extended to 13 games.

Boston 3, Buffalo 0--Andy Moog made 31 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Bruins swept a weekend series against the Sabres with a victory at Buffalo.

It was the second consecutive time Moog and the Bruins shut out the Sabres at Memorial Auditorium. Moog had a shutout in Buffalo on March 24.

Chicago 5, St. Louis 4--Jeremy Roenick reached the 100-point plateau for the second consecutive season with two power-play goals and Chris Chelios had four assists at St. Louis as Chicago moved into a first-place tie in the Norris Division.

Roenick, who has 45 goals, became only the second Blackhawk in franchise history to reach the century mark two years in a row. Dennis Savard did it it in 1981-82 and again the following season.

Vancouver 3, Ottawa 0--Kay Whitmore notched his first shutout of the season as the Vancouver Canucks maintained their lead in the Smythe Division at Ottawa.

Adrien Plavsic, Sergio Momesso and Pavel Bure scored as Vancouver won its 42nd game, matching the team record for wins in a season set last year.

Philadelphia 4, Toronto 0--Tommy Soderstrom picked up his fourth shutout since Jan. 10 and Kevin Dineen scored two goals at Philadelphia.

The rookie goaltender turned away 26 Toronto shots to improve his record to 16-17-6.
