Robert Maxson, president of Nevada Las Vegas, weathered a 6 1/2-hour session with the Board of Regents to discuss his leadership of the school and its beleaguered basketball program.

“I’m president of UNLV,” he said when the meeting ended. “I can’t make any public comment. I’m certainly satisfied with the hearing.”

Regent Shelley Berkley, who has urged Maxson to step down, said it gave the president an opportunity to present his views on the problems growing out of the school’s long-standing scrutiny by the NCAA.

Berkley’s call for Maxson to resign cited leadership problems that emerged last month with revelations of academic irregularities by basketball star J.R. Rider and prompted the president to request the personnel session.

No vote on Maxson’s fate could be taken at Wednesday’s meeting because it was not announced early enough to allow official action under Nevada’s Open Meeting Law.
