Cincinnati Red first baseman Hal Morris will have surgery today on his separated left shoulder and will be sidelined eight to 10 weeks.

Morris injured the shoulder during a fight in a March 30 exhibition game against the Cleveland Indians. He and Indian pitcher Jose Mesa, who touched off the fight by throwing a fastball behind Morris’ head, were suspended for three games each and fined $1,000 each by the ruling executive council.

The major leagues, helped by the two expansion teams, set records for total and average attendance during spring training this year. The 28 clubs drew 3,041,788, topping last year’s attendance of 2,754,300. The average of 7,242 broke the previous record of 6,920, set last year.
