FIRST-TEAM PROFILES

Ryan Briggs: GUARD, SIMI VALLEY

Briggs is quick with a helping hand--especially when it leads to easy scores. He is the Pioneers’ all-time assists leader with 474, including an area-leading 257 this season for an average of 8.3. Simi Valley was the Southern Section Division I-AA runner-up and Briggs was selected co-most valuable player of the Marmonte League and All-Southern Section Division I.

Brian Clark: GUARD, SANTA CLARA

Clark is the latest in a long line of standouts developed by Saint Coach Lou Cvijanovich. He was selected co-MVP of the Frontier League after leading the perennial county power to the league title and the semifinals of the Southern Section Division IV playoffs. Clark, who led the Saints in scoring and assists with averages of 17.3 and 3.1, was All-Southern Section Division IV.

Nick Foster: CENTER, THOUSAND OAKS

One of three Lancers selected to The Times’ team, Foster and his identical twin, Paul, formed the county’s most powerful inside tandem. Nick led Thousand Oaks in rebounding with an average of 9.2 and finished tied for second in the area in blocked shots (3.0). He averaged 11.5 points and was an All-Marmonte League and second-team All-Southern Section Division I selection.

Paul Foster: FORWARD, THOUSAND OAKS

The Times’ Ventura County player of the year led balanced Thousand Oaks--ranked first in The Times’ regional poll--in scoring (16.2) and finished second in rebounding (8.0) and blocked shots (2.8) to brother Nick. Paul shared the Marmonte League MVP award with Simi Valley’s Briggs and was selected second-team All-Southern Section Division I.

Jason Hartman: FORWARD, THOUSAND OAKS

Although Hartman played somewhat in the shadows of the Fosters, he established himself as one of the county’s elite performers. He does everything well. Hartman, a junior, led the Lancers in steals (2.3), was second in assists (3.0) and ranked third in scoring (14.1) and rebounding (7.3). He was an All-Marmonte League and All-Southern Section Division I selection.

Anthony McCurtis: CENTER, VENTURA

McCurtis and teammate Darien Roberts led the Cougars to the Channel League championship. Both earned a place on The Times’ All-Ventura County team. One of the area’s most agile big men, McCurtis paced Ventura in rebounding (7.8) and blocked shots (1.5). He also had the ability to score with defenders surrounding him. He averaged 15.2 points, second to Roberts.

Dewauen Nunnery: GUARD, CHANNEL ISLANDS

Defending Nunnery is easier said than done. He was one of the county’s quickest guards and an adept ballhandler. Nunnery averaged a team-high 18.3 points. He finished second in the Marmonte League in assists (5.6) to Simi Valley’s Briggs. Nunnery, an all-league selection, is one of three Nunnerys (first cousins) selected to either The Times’ first or second teams.

Wendell Nunnery: FORWARD, HUENEME

This Nunnery dominated games whether playing forward or guard. He was unquestionably the Vikings’ leader. A gifted scorer from the outside or inside, Nunnery led county players in scoring (21.6) and averaged 9.2 rebounds. He was co-MVP of the Channel League and second-team All-Southern Section Division I. His defense was equally strong.

Darien Roberts: GUARD, VENTURA

Opponents divided time and energy trying to defense McCurtis and Roberts. Their endeavors were mostly unsuccessful. Roberts was the team’s spark plug. He averaged a team-high 16.8 points. He scored a personal-high 40 points against Thousand Oaks in the championship final of the Ventura tournament. Roberts shared the Channel League MVP award with Wendell Nunnery.
