COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Score Late to Defeat Nevada Las Vegas

Cal State Fullerton scored five runs in the final three innings to pull away from Nevada Las Vegas, 13-9, Saturday and complete a three-game sweep of the Rebels in Las Vegas.

The Titans had 14 hits and were issued 11 bases on balls, the day after receiving a conference-record 16. Trailing 8-6, Fullerton (25-9, 14-1) scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie and then scored one in the seventh and two in each of the eighth and ninth innings.

Adam Millan had two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in for the Titans, who are ranked third in the nation.

Chad Rolish, a junior from Servite, picked up his first victory of the season. The Titans have swept four of their five conference series with two remaining. They play host to second-place Cal State Long Beach Friday and finish the regular season at home May 7-9 against San Jose State.

In nonconference baseball:

Fresno State 21, Chapman 4--Brad Dandridge went four for five, including a home run, had five runs scored and five RBIs to lead Fresno State. Javier Renteria also had five RBIs for the Bulldogs, who completed a three-game sweep of the Panthers.

Buster Nietzke led Chapman with three hits and three RBIs. Nietzke, Abijah Alastra, and Brian Green each had home runs for Chapman.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 10-16, San Jose State 0-1--Cheryl Longeway and Tiffany Boyd each pitched three-hitters to lead the sweep for Cal State Fullerton (20-16, 9-5). Boyd added four hits and five RBIs in the doubleheader.

First baseman Rose Garces led the Titans with seven RBIs in the two games.

In men’s and women’s track and field:

UC Irvine second, third--Pam Kurtela, a junior from Los Alamitos, won the 200 in a wind-aided 24.47 and 400 in 57.07 for UC Irvine, which finished second to Cal State Long Beach, 155 points to 180. UCI’s Andrea Dean, a freshman from Mission Viejo High, won the 100 (12.33) and Jade Preato won the 3,000 (10:12.12) and Liz Bauer won the high jump (5-3 3/4). Cal State Fullerton’s Ruth Viramontes won the 800 in 2:16.83, which finished fourth with 53 points.

In the men’s competition, UCI’s Gregor Neumann won the pole vault (15-1 3/4) and finished second in the javelin (177-7), third in the 110 hurdles (15.60), third in the discus (136-6) and fifth in the shot put (40-8 1/4) at Cal State Long Beach. Fullerton’s John Kidds won the 400 hurdles at 54.67. Long Beach won the meet with 179 points; UC Santa Barbara was second with 169 1/2; Irvine had 129 and Fullerton 100 1/2.

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 9, UC Santa Barbara 0--Aaron Stolpman won at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-3, to lead UC Irvine (10-9), which has won four of its last five matches.
