Raiders Sign Kelly; Smith Agrees, Green Deal Called Near
- Share via
The Raiders agreed in principle Tuesday to a new contract with their fullback, Steve Smith, an unrestricted free agent, and have signed unrestricted free agent linebacker Joe Kelly, formerly of the New York Jets.
Both Gaston Green and Coach Wade Phillips of the Denver Broncos said it was their understanding that a trade has been completed to send the Bronco running back to the Raiders for a third-round draft choice.
But there was no official announcement from either the Raiders or Broncos.
Green’s contract has only one season remaining, at a salary of $975,000, and an adjustment has been made to add an additional year at $1.05 million, presumably clearing the last hurdle to a trade. Once Green signs that extension, the deal will be official.
Smith, who made $550,000 last season, has agreed to a three-year, $3.6-million deal.
Kelly, a seven-year veteran, was a first-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 1986.
