The Times will honor the 10 boys and 10 girls basketball players chosen to the 1993 Glendale-area all-star team Sunday at the Pasadena Hilton.

The area players and coaches of the year will also be announced at the breakfast and awards ceremony that also will include the all-stars from the San Gabriel Valley.

Four boys and two girls from the Glendale-area were selected first-team All-Southern Section in soccer.

Senior midfielder Tim Durkin and senior defender Dennis Monty were named to the Division I team after leading the Golden Knights to the playoff semifinals.

Glendale High midfielder Sarkis Banyon was named to the Division II team and goalie Kyle Bilowitz made the Division IV team.

Danielle Robertshaw and Jennifer Price of Crescenta Valley were selected to the Division II team.

Denise Gutierrez of Flintridge Sacred Heart, Lucinda Buchan of Flintridge Prep, Brenda Lyon and Kelly Christiansen of Hoover, Darleen Anderson of Glendale, Danielle Robertshaw of Crescenta Valley and Kathy and Patty Zimmerman of Alverno will participate in a 12-day softball tour of Japan July 7-19.

The girls, members of the Foothill Blazers 18 & under softball team, will play a series of games against the top amateur teams in Japan, including the defending national champion.

Martin Hilke of Crescenta Valley finished fifth in the high jump, Nada Kawar of Crescenta Valley finished seventh in the shotput and Margarito Casillas of Hoover finished ninth in the 3,200-meter event at the Arcadia Invitational track meet Saturday.

Hilke cleared 6-feet-6, Kawar’s had a put of 40-11, and Casillas finished in 9 minutes 14 seconds.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team entered the week 14-13 and 9-10 in Western State Conference play after an 18-7 nonconference loss to Chaffey on Friday.

Glendale’s Robert Mancilla has 25 stolen bases, seven shy of the school record set by Ron Bachmeier in 1980.

Glendale plays host to Pierce today in a WSC game. The Vaqueros travel to Los Angeles Valley on Saturday.

Carlos Guerrero of Glendale College won the javelin event at the La Verne Invitational track meet last weekend.

Guerrero won with a throw of 184-7.

Robert Nelson and Erwin Khachikian won their heats in the 800 in 2:00 and 2:01, respectively.

Nelson will compete in the steeplechase at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays today.

COLLEGES

Blair Slattery of Occidental College was selected third-team Division III All-American by Basketball Times magazine.

Slattery, a 6-6 junior center, averaged 20.6 points and 10.6 rebounds for the Tigers, who finished 16-9, the school’s best record since 1978.

Slattery was selected player of the year in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Occidental baseball team entered the week 11-11-2 and 6-6 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Junior outfielder Stuart Kramer is batting .365 with a conference-leading eight home runs and 30 runs batted in.

Senior catcher Bob Kennedy is batting .405 and has nine stolen bases in 11 attempts. Freshman Paul Grim is 4-1 with a 5.17 earned-run average in 54 innings.

Occidental plays host to Pomona-Pitzer on Friday in the first game of a three-game SCIAC series.

Konstantine Kinderich of Occidental qualified for the NCAA Division III national track championships with his performance last week at an invitational meet in San Diego.

Kinderich finished the 1,500-meter event in 3 minutes 49.45 seconds.

Kinderich is the fourth Occidental athlete to qualify for nationals, which will be May 26-29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio.

Gunnar Miller has qualified in the pole vault, Jose Garcia will compete in the 10,000, and Becky Kopchick has qualified in the 3,000 and 5,000.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Nada Kawar, Crescenta Valley--It was big week for Kawar, a senior who was named to the All-Southern Section Division II basketball team, then broke the school record in the discus at the Arcadia Invitational track meet.

Kawar’s throw of 118-6 broke the record of 117-5 set by Donna Mayhew in 1978.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Kim Ojeda, Cal State Los Angeles--Ojeda won the 3,000-meter event at a triangular meet with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cal State Bakersfield last weekend. Ojeda finished third in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational on March 27 to attain the NCAA Division II qualifying standard for next month’s national meet in San Angelo, Tex.

Ojeda’s time of 35 minutes 53 seconds was the fourth-fastest in school history.

MISCELLANY

A golf tournament sponsored by the chambers of commerce in La Canada-Flintridge, Montrose-Verdugo City and Crescenta Valley will be played May 24 at the La Canada-Flintridge Country Club.
