EARTH DAY IN L.A. : Events Pack Awareness in Fun Packages

Those willing to travel farther afield (by car pool, of course) can find more earth-friendly activities, exhibits and special events for families. Up L.A. way, these include:

Earthwalk 1993

A fund-raising 10K trek, Earthwalk will let you rub sweaty elbows with the stars Saturday while raising money for environmental causes. Sponsored by the Permanent Charities Committee of the Entertainment Industries in Universal City, the walk will be hosted by Chevy Chase and his wife, Jayni, and is expected to attract TV personalities from several popular shows.

The walk will proceed through the streets of Universal City Studios, Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Ranch Studios and will benefit Heal the Bay, Project Eco-School, Target Stores’ Kids For Saving Earth Program and other projects.

Registration forms are available at Target Stores; Origins cosmetics counters at Nordstrom, Bullocks and Robinsons-May stores, and at the event itself: Registration will begins at 8:30 a.m. on the Universal City Studios back lot (shuttle service will be provided from the studios’ parking lot at 100 Universal Plaza). “Our Planet Earth”

Sunday at the California Museum of Science and Industry, 700 State Drive in Los Angeles, “Our Planet Earth” will feature a concert by children’s balladeer Michael Mish (“the Pied Piper of the environment”) and screenings of IMAX films including “Mountain Gorilla” and “Rainforest.” Tickets are $8 for children, $10 for adults and are good for the concert (at 2 p.m.) and one film. While you are at the museum, you also can take in “Our Urban Environment,” a permanent interactive exhibit that uses the Globehead Family claymation characters to show kids how they can help out Momma Earth in their own back yards. All this month, visitors can cash in their old telephone directories for a free Globehead poster. Also at the museum (through June 27): “Darkened Waters: Profile of an Oil Spill,” a display based on the Exxon Valdez disaster. Admission is free. (213) 744-7400.

Earth Day Celebration

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County’s “Earth Day Celebration” April 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will include environmentally themed music and storytelling for the kids, and lectures for adults.
