The NHL’s longest winning streak ended at 17 games as the Pittsburgh Penguins settled for a 6-6 tie with the New Jersey Devils Wednesday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

Joe Mullen scored his 33rd goal with 66 seconds to play in the third period of the Penguins’ regular-season finale, enabling the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions to extend their unbeaten streak to 18 games.

The Penguins had pulled goalie Tom Barrasso for a sixth skater.

Mario Lemieux, who scored two goals, sent the puck behind the net to Jaromir Jagr and Jagr found Mullen alone to the left of goalie Craig Billington for a shot between the pads.

The tie was the Penguins’ first non-winning effort since March 5, when they lost to the New York Rangers, 3-1. Their 17-game winning streak was two more than the New York Islanders’ previous NHL record.

Lemieux, who missed about two months while undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s disease, gave his teammates some anxious moments 1:30 into the game when he was cross-checked by Scott Pellerin and seemingly hurt his left leg.

After two minutes on the ice, he got to his feet and played the rest of the game. His short-handed, breakaway goal at 12:40 of the second period was his 69th and gave Pittsburgh a 5-4 lead.

Boston 4, Ottawa 2--Joe Juneau had three assists at Ottawa to finish the season with 70, equaling Peter Stastny’s NHL rookie assist record, and the Bruins matched their best record in 15 years.

Juneau is only the fifth rookie in NHL history--and the second this season behind Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets--to score 100 points. He had 32 goals to finish with 102 points.

The Bruins won eight consecutive games--and 16 of 18--to finish at the top of the Adams Division with a record of 51-26-7.

Washington 2, N.Y. Rangers 0--Peter Bondra scored both goals and Rick Tabaracci got the shutout for the Capitals at New York.

Hartford 5, N.Y. Islanders 4--Mark Janssens deflected a pass from Patrick Poulin into the net at 1:08 of overtime, giving the Whalers the victory at Hartford, Conn.

Janssens, breaking to the net, backhanded a pass from the left circle by Poulin past Islander goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick. Poulin had three assists.
