HIGH LIFE : Auto Art Drives the Style of Sunny Hills Students

Share

In Southern California, life on wheels is almost an art form. Three students from Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton recently incorporated their artistic skills with a Mitsubishi vehicle to create an award-winning display of “style” at MainPlace/Santa Ana.

Entrants in the competition used the cars as the focal point of scenes depicting their idea of Southern California style.

Chad Tons, Darci Raphael and Heather Richards placed first in competition against two dozen other high school students from throughout Orange County. They created a camping scene using mannequins, outdoor gear and stuffed animals. In addition to splitting a $500 scholarship check, they earned $500 for their school’s art program from Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America. Students were allowed to use clothing, surfboards, skis, golf clubs and other equipment from mall stores to make their display. Representatives from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Costa Mesa judged the displays for originality, creativity, theme portrayal, arrangement and overall aesthetic appearance.

Placing second in the competition were Bethany Colson, Candice Berger and Robbie Nowell from Esperanza High School in Anaheim; placing third were Mike Walton and Jeff Peters of Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo High School students took some impressive awards recently at the Model United Nations national championships in New York. Student delegates Joe Horvath and Jana Marvel won first place in the Security Council competition, which tested students’ abilities to represent the policies of their school’s assigned country, Belgium.

More than 20 Mission Viejo students attended the session after raising money through individual efforts.

The school also won second place in the broader Main Committee category. Other students involved were Kent Jancarik, Ryan Aday, Dave Moniz, Mike Kincaid, Cami Jones, Kristy Moran, Lynnae Stoehr, Kate Staiger, Shauna Hann, Tania Mieke, Jason Okazaki, Sandra Nashif, Jon Jewell, Dave Bayer, Kevin Brennan, Sarah McGovern, Jessica Zerwas, Amanda McLaughlin, Sudipta Chatterjee, Ellie Terry and Matt Reisdorf.
