Santa Monica Debate Over Crosswalk Safety

Share

“At Cross-Purposes in Safety Debate” (Times, March 14) captured the essence of the debate over crosswalks. Given the universality of their use, there has been surprisingly little discussion of their quiet disappearance.

There were people trying to do the right thing on both sides of the issue, but my hat is off to the majority of the Santa Monica City Council who voted to have the city’s traffic engineer figure out a way to make crosswalks safer rather than eliminating them. That hasn’t been the traffic engineers’ natural approach to the problem over the past 40 years; they prefer instead to protect pedestrians by making foot travel impractical.

If it takes pop-up steel bollards to let pedestrians cross the street safely, then so be it.
