SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS : Parkland Acquired in Benedict Canyon
Conservation officials have acquired 31 acres of new parkland in Benedict Canyon as part of an effort to preserve a continuous band of open space for wildlife movement between Griffith Park and Topanga State Park.
John Diaz, chief of land acquisition for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, described the tract as “beautifully lush,” and said it connects two larger swaths of parkland previously acquired by the conservancy: a 100-acre tract in Sherman Oaks just north of Mulholland Drive and a 160-acre parcel south of Mulholland.
Diaz said the acquisition involved a combined sale and donation from the Frawley and Bourguignon families, which he said were paid a below-market price of $1.3 million.
A dedication ceremony Wednesday for the new parkland drew about 75 officials and guests. The host was singer-songwriter Don Henley, who lives near the tract.
