Share

A California condor chick hatched Friday at the Los Angeles Zoo, bringing to 68 the number of the vultures in existence worldwide.

The Los Angeles Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park together house 61 of the birds, and seven are flying free in Los Padres National Forest.

The 6 1/2-ounce, sparsely feathered chick emerged from its pale aqua shell at 9:40 a.m., after a 58-day incubation period. The chick’s sex will be determined in three months by chromosome analyses through a blood sample. The chick is the fifth offspring of a condor named Pismo and her mate, known as AC6.
