Winston Cup points leader Dale Earnhardt rebounded from a poor run a day earlier to break the North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway qualifying record.
Earnhardt, who had the 24th best time in the first day of qualifying for the First Union 400 NASCAR race, turned in a speed of 117.616 m.p.h.--more than 2 m.p.h. faster than his runs Friday.
The Chevrolet driver broke the mark of 117.524 on the five-eighths-mile track set by Rusty Wallace in the spring of 1989.
Because positions 1-20 were decided by the best speeds Friday, Earnhardt will start today’s race from the 21st spot.
