SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Though Laguna Hills High broke a 12-year-old meet record, the El Toro girls’ team dominated the running events of the 34th Tustin Relays Saturday at Rancho Santiago College.

The Chargers ran away with the team title, outdistancing runner-up Santa Margarita, 65-34. Canyon took third with 31 points, edging El Dorado by a point. Fountain Valley was fifth with 28.

“I don’t think it was a case of any one individual standing out more than any other,” El Toro Coach Rick Hagin said. “I just thought it was a total team effort. All the girls were consistent. Everyone came through.”

El Toro won three relay events (6,400, shuttle hurdles and 800) and finished second to El Dorado in two others (the 1,600 and 400). In the 800, El Toro and El Dorado finished in a dead heat at 1:47.2, but El Toro was awarded the race by a coin flip.

The Laguna Hills girls’ distance medley had the lone record-breaking performance. The team of Heather McGlone, Kelly Robson, Tiffany Boykin and Heidi Sickler broke North Torrance’s 1981 mark by 10.5 seconds, finishing in 12:25.2.

In the boys’ division, Rowland High edged St. John Bosco, 41-40 1/2, for the title. Fountain Valley finished third with 32 points, while Irvine and Marina tied for fourth, each with 28. Mater Dei was sixth with 25.

The Monarchs and Irvine were the only county teams to win boys’ events. Mater Dei won the shuttle hurdles and the 3,200. The Vaqueros won the sprint medley.

The meet, one of the county’s oldest, was dedicated to Earl Engman, longtime track and football coach, who was honored during the event. Engman, who had a brief career with the San Francisco 49ers, is a former track coach at Santa Ana High.
