ROUNDUP : UC Riverside Sweeps Doubleheader From Cal State Dominguez Hills

The UC Riverside baseball team knocked Cal State Dominguez Hills out of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. by sweeping a doubleheader, 7-5 and 5-2, on Saturday at Riverside.

The Toros (23-18, 10-9 in the CCAA) led, 5-4, in the first game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. But Riverside put together four consecutive hits to win the game.

Riverside pitcher Daron Kirkreit, who competed for the United States in the Barcelona Olympics, pitched a four-hitter in the nightcap to earn the victory.

The Toros, who were ranked 16th in NCAA Division II, play a nonconference game against Westmont College on Wednesday in Santa Barbara.

The Loyola Marymount baseball team split a West Coast Conference doubleheader with UC San Diego on Saturday.

San Diego (28-12, 15-6) won the opener, 8-3, after scoring four runs in the first inning. Larry Williams and Josh Stepner each had two-run homers. Travis Burgus (7-1) was the winning pitcher and Shawn Hammett (6-6) took the loss.

The Lions (17-24, 10-8) won the second game, 11-3. Andy Biaggi hit a two-run homer in the second and Chris Intelkofer had a solo homer and Anthony Napolitano a three-run home run in the fourth. Shane Bowers (5-6) earned the victory and Pat James (8-5) took the loss.

Loyola beat San Diego, 7-4, on Friday.

Loyola will play host to Christ College Irvine at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team has signed Palmdale High guard Latisha Beam, an All-Southern Section Division I selection last season, to a national letter of intent.

The 5-foot-10 Beam averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds as a senior. A three-year starter, she also was named to the All-Golden League first team last season.
