Where the Ducks Might Look

An unauthorized, speculative list of possible candidates to be the Mighty Ducks’ first coach:

NHL Head Coaches and Assistants Ted Green--Edmonton Oilers coach. Though Oilers have embarked on youth movement and missed playoffs for first time in history, his job is considered safe. Met Duck General Manager Jack Ferreira when both were with New England of World Hockey Assn. in ‘70s. Lorne Henning--New York Islanders assistant, former head coach in Minnesota (‘85-87). Ferreira is former North Star GM, but their tenures did not coincide. Dave Lewis--Detroit assistant for past six years. Don Maloney--New York Rangers assistant. Was head coach at Winnipeg (‘86-88) and Toronto (‘84-86). Bob Murdoch--San Jose associate coach. Has ties to Ferreira, former Shark GM. Was head coach at Winnipeg (‘89-91) and Chicago (‘87-88). Mike Murphy--Toronto assistant. Was Kings’ head coach (‘86-88) with a record of 20-37-8 in parts of two seasons between Pat Quinn and Robbie Ftorek. Roger Neilson--Veteran NHL coach was fired by Rangers during season after they set club record with 50 victories last year. Rumored to be candidate to coach South Florida franchise. Also coached Toronto, Buffalo, Vancouver and Kings. Cap Raeder--King assistant for past five years. Drafted by New England Whalers in ‘70s when Ferreira was team executive. Terry Simpson--Winnipeg assistant, was coach of Islanders (‘86-88). Rick Wilson--Minnesota assistant and former assistant with Kings.

Minor League Coaches Kevin Constantine--Coach of Kansas City Blades of the International Hockey League. Knows Ferreira through minor league affiliation with San Jose. Marc Crawford--Coach of St. John’s Maple Leafs of American Hockey League. Young coach has been called “this year’s Barry Melrose” after Melrose was plucked from Adirondack of the AHL to coach Kings. Rick Dudley--Coach of IHL’s San Diego Gulls, who this season surpassed Montreal Canadiens’ professional record of 60 victories.
