COUNTYWIDE : Committee to Plan Network of Trails

Ventura County officials have formed a committee to create a network of trails across the county, officials said Monday.

The Regional Trails Advisory Committee, formed by the supervisors following complaints that the county needs a more complete trail system, will meet for the first time on April 28.

The 33-member panel includes supervisors Maggie Kildee and Vicky Howard, other community leaders, business members, hikers, equestrians and cyclists.

“We felt there was a need for a trail system,” Howard said. “We have bits and pieces here and there. We have to lay out a network and adopt a formal trail map.”

Kildee said, “What we have to do is sit down and listen to everyone. There is not an abundance of money, but with some creativity we might have a good possibility of putting some things together.”

Currently the path that runs along California 33 in the Ojai Valley is the only county-run trail, said Ron Blakemore, the county’s program administrator for the committee.

In addition to creating more county trails, officials also hope to link the trails in the cities, Blakemore said.
