Writers’ Group Honors a Woman for the First Time

“Postcards,” a first novel by Annie Proulx, has won the 1993 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, marking the first time a book by a woman has received the national award since its inception in 1980.

The prize was founded by writers to honor their peers and is the largest juried prize for fiction given in the United States. In selecting the winner, Judges Rudolfo Anaya, Frederick Busch and Janet Kauffman considered more than 275 novels and short-story collections published in the U.S. in 1992.

Proulx will receive her $15,000 award at a ceremony May 15 at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.
