TENNIS ROUNDUP : Edberg, Lendl Win at Monaco

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg and fifth-seeded Ivan Lendl were winners Wednesday in the Monte Carlo Open at Monaco.

Edberg survived a first-set scare to defeat Javier Sanchez of Spain, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, in a third-round match. The Swede came back from a 3-0 deficit in the tiebreaker and then breezed through the third set.

Lendl beat Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 7-5, 6-3, and continued his comeback from two injury-troubled seasons. The tournament is being played on clay, Lendl’s favorite surface.

Andrei Medvedev, who also likes clay courts and is the tour’s hottest teen-age player, scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over ninth-seeded Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands.

Medvedev, of Ukraine, has won 13 consecutive matches on clay this year.

The seventh-seeded Medvedev advanced to a quarterfinal meeting with Edberg.

Federica Bonsignori of Italy upset third-seeded Manuela Maleeva Fragniere, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in the opening round of a tournament at Barcelona.

Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, playing before her hometown fans, was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Alexandra Fusai of France.

No. 4-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa also advanced with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Sandra Dopfer of Austria.

Unseeded Laura Golarsa of Italy rallied to defeat eighth-seeded Judith Wiesner of Austria, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

Top-seeded Patty Fendick of Sacramento defeated Japan’s Nana Miyagi, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the Malaysia Women’s Open at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Defending champion Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Rika Hiraki of Japan, 7-5, 6-2.
