Junior college All-American Karleen Shields, a 5-foot-7 guard who was the top-scoring player in college, male or female, last season with an average of 42.2 points per game at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Calif., has signed a letter of intent with USC, Coach Marianne Stanley announced. Shields also averaged a state-leading 19.5 rebounds last season.

Said Contra Costa Coach Paul DeBolt: “She was probably the best JC player in the nation this past season.”

Stanley also said letters had been received from Tina Thompson, an All-Southern Section center from Inglewood Morningside, and Shanika Porter, a 5-11 forward from Paramount.
