AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Eldred Retires 23 in a Row; Brewers Win

Cal Eldred pitched a one-hitter for eight innings and struck out 10, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night at Milwaukee.

Eldred (3-1) gave up a one-out double to Rafael Palmeiro in the first inning before retiring 23 consecutive batters. After giving up his only walk, to Manuel Lee to start the ninth, Eldred was relieved by Jesse Orosco.

Brewer Manager Phil Garner was booed for taking out Eldred. Orosco finished the combined one-hitter for his first save.

A day after former Brewer teammate Chris Bosio pitched a no-hitter for Seattle against Boston, Eldred came close.

After striking out David Hulse to start the game, Eldred gave up a double into the right-field corner by Palmeiro. The Rangers hit only three balls out of the infield all night.

The 6-foot-4 Eldred had nine strikeouts through the first five innings and struck out the side in the second and fifth. Eldred, 11-2 last season with a 10-game winning streak after his promotion from the minors in July, is 11-0 in night games.

Milwaukee broke through against Kevin Brown (2-1) in the third, ending his 15-inning scoreless streak by scoring two unearned runs.

Chicago 5, Toronto 4--Ron Karkovice hit a three-run double off the glove of third baseman Ed Sprague, highlighting a five-run fourth inning that sent the White Sox past the Blue Jays at Toronto.

Joe Carter’s home run off Kirk McCaskill (1-3) put Toronto ahead, 3-0, in the third. But the White Sox bounced back the next inning to knock out Al Leiter (1-2).

Detroit 12, Minnesota 4--Alan Trammell’s first hit of the season, a two-run pinch-double, keyed a six-run sixth inning at Detroit to lift the Tigers.

Tony Phillips led off the game with a home run and Travis Fryman homered and had four runs batted in for Detroit. Minnesota’s Dave Winfield hit his 11th career grand slam.

The score was tied at 4-4 when Detroit batted around in the sixth against Scott Erickson (0-2) and reliever Mark Guthrie. Trammell, hitless in his first 11 at-bats, keyed the burst with his double and Fryman had a sacrifice fly.

Mike Moore (2-1) won for the first time in 11 starts at the Metrodome. His last victory in Minnesota was April 13, 1986, while with Seattle.

Kansas City 7, Baltimore 6--Brian McRae hit a three-run homer and Kevin McReynolds also connected during a seven-run second inning as the Royals held off the Orioles at Kansas City.

The Orioles rallied for three runs in the ninth, but lost for the fourth time in five games. Baltimore dropped below Kansas City for the worst record in the majors.

The Royals, who homered twice in a game for the first time this season, have won four of five.

Mark Gardner (1-1) got his first American League victory, giving up three hits in seven innings.

Brady Anderson hit a two-run triple off Rusty Meacham with two outs in the ninth and scored on third baseman Phil Hiatt’s error. Jeff Montgomery retired Cal Ripken on a fly ball for his fourth save.

Arthur Rhodes (0-1) lasted only 1 1/3 innings and was charged with six runs.

Seattle 6, New York 3--Henry Cotto’s two-run single capped a four-run rally in the seventh inning and the Mariners, helped by New York’s sloppy fielding, beat the Yankees and Jim Abbott at Seattle.

Abbott (1-3) took a 3-2 lead into the seventh. Tino Martinez and Mike Blowers singled with one out and Dave Valle hit a grounder to third baseman Wade Boggs, whose throw was dropped by second baseman Pat Kelly for an error.

Omar Vizquel’s bases-loaded single drove in one run and another scored when Boggs bobbled a grounder and could only make a play at first base. Cotto’s single made it 6-3.

Mike Hampton (1-1) earned his first major league victory, pitching 2 2/3 innings. Norm Charlton worked the ninth for his second save.
