COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Guijarro Sets Another Swim Record for Golden West

Golden West’s Rafael Guijarro set his second South Coast Conference swimming record in as many days in the conference finals Friday at Long Beach Belmont Plaza pool.

Guijarro won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute 40.28 seconds, beating the previous mark of 1:42.73. He had set a conference record in the 500 freestyle Thursday. Golden West leads the men’s competition with 667 points. Long Beach (447) is second and Fullerton (361) third.

The Golden West women’s team also holds a commanding lead. The Rustlers have 458 points. El Camino (350) is in second and Long Beach (288) third.

In the Orange Empire Conference swimming championships:

Orange Coast leads--The OCC women’s team won five individual events and a relay to pull away with one day left. The Pirates have 499 points. Saddleback (358) is in second. OCC’s Michelle Pagan won the 200 individual medley (2:18.88) and Sharon Clairemont won the 50 butterfly (28.47). Michelle Quigley won the 200 freestyle (1:57.42), Lynn Sansui won the 50 breaststroke (32.61) and Brandi Kossub won the 50 backstroke (28.42) for OCC.

The OCC men have 462 points to lead and Grossmont (406) is second.

David Beck of Saddleback won the one-meter diving with 445.60 points.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Cypress 1, Saddleback 0--Kim Taylor pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts for host Cypress (40-17, 13-4). Kristi Richersonhad a two-out triple and scored on a single by Kerry Moloney in the third inning. Saddleback is 22-14, 7-10.

Fullerton 4, Riverside 3--Cindy Escobedo, who went two for three and had a double, got the game-winning RBI at the top of the seventh inning to give visiting Fullerton the victory. Fullerton is 25-9-1, 13-4.

Rancho Santiago 5, Golden West 1--Pitcher Jamie Parker (15-16) threw a five-hitter to lead host Rancho Santiago (17-17, 10-7).
